Purple Heart Hunts in the Press

Press Release:

Shane Woods Memorial Purple Heart Hunts is being formed as a way to honor the sacrifices of our Nation's heroes though providing Alaskan hunting opportunities to Global War on Terrorism veterans wounded in the call of duty. Special emphasis is placed on accommodating those veterans dealing with mobility impairments as a result of combat injuries.

The inspiration for Purple Heart Hunts is Spc. Shane Woods; who gave his life while serving his country in the cause of freedom during combat operations near Ar Ramadi, Iraq on August 9, 2006. Shane was an avid outdoorsman, and grew up hunting, hiking, and fishing in the wilds of Alaska. His father, Alaska Master Guide Wayne Woods, says "Shane loved his Alaska home, and it is a priviledge to share some of the passion and enthusiasm with which he lived. We believe in the healing and restorative properties that comes from spending time in the outdoor activities that are such a large part of our national heritage. It is also a way for me to say "thank you" to the soldiers that served with him, and bear the cost of freedom."

The first hunt took place near Cordova, Alaska during May 2006. Participating veterans were Sgt.Juan Arredondo, and Sgt. Robert Leonard. Both harvested trophy black bears, and got in some sportfishing. Assisting in the field were Jerry Tkac, Chris Johnson, G.T. Nunn and Kale Trangmoe. Also present was USMC (ret) master sniper Bill Wiseman. Logistical and administrative support was provided by Wounded Warrior Project Outdoors.
